Whale Watching!!!

Oh my goodness. I have way too much to post about! I just had two of the very BEST weeks of my entire life on our "intra-semester break"! I can't write about that yet though because I still haven't written about my magical whale watching experience! I had been planning on whale watching in Hervey Bay, the whale watching capital of the world. That would have cost $175 though and there was a student guild trip for $50 off of Mooloolaba beach (beach closest to school) so I decided to do that instead. It was AMAZING!!! I was going to go by myself but my friends Stefan and Alex decided to come with me, which was awesome! We saw soooo many whales and dolphins! I almost cried I was so excited (in case you don't know, whales are my favorite animals, so this was a dream come true for me)! Every time a whale was spotted everyone on the boat would stampede to that side of the boat and it was insane! I'll let pictures help me describe the rest...

We started off the day with some kangaroos on the walk to the bus! I was hoping that meant we'd have good luck with seeing whales and apparently I was right!

After about 45 minutes dolphins started swimming alongside our boat! So cool!!!

Notice how close the whales were to land- I was surprised!

 2 whales swimming together

 So many dolphins!!! :)

This dolphin popped his/her head up to check us out! They all seemed to be very curious about us!

The whales continuously popped their heads up to see where each other were and to check us out! SO cool!!!!

I didn't crop this person's head out because it lets you see how close the whales were!

This is another picture that shows how close the whales were!

 So massive!!!

It was like the whales were posing for us!

I'm the biggest fan of dogs, but this dog was SOOOOOO annoying! He was barking the ENTIRE time and wouldn't be quiet!!!

This boat, the Croc One, was the boat Steve Irwin was out on when he got killed by the stingray

 Australian Pelicans- they are HUGE!!!

I'll be living in one of these houses in the future...

It was SUCH a magical day! I want to go whale watching again and again! My friend Hilary and I have decided we want to own a whale watching boat together haha! :)

  1. holy cow, that was awesome. That is on my list of things to do - my wife went when we were in Hawaii, I was playing golf. I am so happy you got to cross this off your bucket list. What kind of whales were they? Have you been able to touch any of the roos on campus yeat? They look so tame - I mean you were maybe 2 feet from the one above? How is the surfing going - I saw the photo of you and your board - are you going to sell it to someone else before you come back? Have a great weekend. Mr. D.

    1. Thanks, it was definitely one of the most surreal magical experiences I've ever had! I can't believe you chose to play golf instead of whale watch in Hawaii!!! I want to go to Hawaii SO badly! And the whales are humpback whales! 12,000 of them migrate past the east coast of Australia every year!

At orientation we learned all about how we're supposed to stay away from the kangaroos on campus! Apparently they'll kick you if you get too close to them. I'm still tempted to try to pet one though! At least that'd be a cool injury to explain haha!

Unfortunately, the picture you saw of me surfing was from surf camp where the boards were WAY bigger than the board I bought. By the end of my last surf lesson I was standing up every time I tried on that board and was actually pretty good at it. The board I bought is WAY shorter and narrower so it's extremely difficult for me to stand up on (the kind of board we used at surf camp is much more expensive, plus they're so heavy they're really hard to carry). Two of my guy friends here have a car and so we've been going surfing a few times a week but it took me up until yesterday to finally stand up on my board for a few seconds! Hopefully by the time I leave I'll be better! And yep, it's not worth taking on the plane because I would never get the chance to use it back in the US anyway (until I move to the beach after I graduate :) ). One of my good friends here already said she'd buy it from me when I leave so it'll have a good home!

Thanks for reading my blog! Miss you lots!!!
